THE BACKSTORY:

Operation: Recall's roots date back to 1989, when a naive but ambitious ten year old set out to design his very own action figure. 33 years later, that figure is on the verge of mass production. This incredible journey picked up steam over the last decade, as friendships were formed and alliances earned. Pre-production of the first Operation: Recall figure kicked off in the spring of 2020, as the creative forces behind the 1982 G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero launch jumped back into action to design their first new o-ring action figure in decades.

It was official: the old band was back together to create one more all new action figure! With design by Ron Rudat, direction by Kirk Bozigian, writing by Larry Hama, package art layouts by Ed Morrill, package illustration by Doug Hart, figure sculpture by Bill Merklein and package design by Ed and Shawn Morrill, this pioneering team of toy industry legends were back in action!

These grizzled veterans were joined by a new generation of toy designers! With accessory 3D modeling by Adam Freeman, 3D engineering and printing by Mike Syfritt, figure molding and casting by Lightbeam3D.com, and figure and accessory painting by Matthew LeCroy, Retelo was finally ready to meet the masses!

Every step of the way: from ideation sketches, to polished line art, to engineering turnarounds and accessory drawings, to presentation art, to package design and illustration, to 3D modeling and printing, to figure sculpting and painting –  everyone had such a good time with this project that they didn't want it to end. It was at this moment that Operation: Recall was born.

In an era of action figure stagnation and replication, the Operation: Recall team believed there were new and exciting ideas out there just waiting to be unearthed and explored by this pioneering team of toy industry legends. They put out a call for submissions and the community did not disappoint! The only challenge was narrowing 177 incredible submissions. Ron Rudat, Kirk Bozigian and Mark Pennington rose to the occasion, and they selected the top 16 concepts they’d like to explore. Head on over to the Operation: Recall Roll Call page to see the winning concepts!
